Single-Ply TPO Roofing SystemTPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) is a single-ply roof membrane constructed from durable ethylene-propylene rubber. TPO roofing systems are durable and long lasting. They are resistant to algae and environmentally friendly and safe to install. TPO is highly resistant to tears, impacts and punctures.
It can be installed in one of three methods: fully adhered, mechanically attached or ballasted. When TPO is fully adhered, it is attached to the substrate with a special bonding agent. Mechanically attached membranes are those that use a special screw-type fastener to secure it and the seams are heat welded together. Ballasted means the membrane is laid over the top of the roof, sealed at all penetrations and around the perimeter, and then a ballast of smooth, round, river rock. TPO can have a manufacturer warranty of up to 35 years depending on manufacturer and install method. TPO rolls are available in many different color and thickness options. Single-Ply PVC (polyvinyl chloride) Roofing SystemThese roofs provide excellent weathering characteristics and are highly resistant to ultraviolet light and most chemicals. The membranes have a reinforced scrim and are puncture and tear resistant. PVC roofs have outstanding seam strength because the sheets are welded together using hot air. A PVC roofing system is well suited for roof-over applications.
Single-ply PVC membrane is similar in appearance and performance to TPO, however a PVC roofing system requires a slightly greater investment than that of a TPO roof. It has been around for quite a bit longer than TPO and performs better when chemicals are present. EPDM Roofing SystemsEPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a single-ply rubber membrane that is extremely durable. Able to withstand extreme temperatures, it is one of the most popular roofing systems among architects, roof consultants and building owners, for both new construction and re-roof projects.
EPDM roofs are fire resistant. They are almost impossible to ignite, and they can actually impede the progress of a fire. An EPDM roof lasts a long time. An EPDM roof can last 50 years or even longer. New formulations for the rubber make these roofs virtually impervious to radiation and damage from UV rays. They are wind resistant and stand up well to hail as large as three inches across. For homeowners attempting to go GREEN , there is no better choice than an EPDM roof. It takes very little energy to construct this material, simple to patch, and when they do need replacing, they are almost 100% recyclable. EPDM is used frequently with living roof applications as a waterproofing barrier below the drainage mat. Slate RoofingSlate tile roofing material may be one the best investments you make. It requires very little maintenance and depending on your geographical location, it could last a lifetime. Aesthetically, slate roofing is unmatched.
Synthetic slate tiles are a great alternative to real slate. Synthetic slate is also very durable and its price point may be more attractive. |
